Startling urban growth in
the NY region over the last 60 years

NEW YORK METROPOLITAN REGION:
MAPPING CHANGE THROUGH TIME

Project Overview
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) built upon their previous successful experience by expanding the temporal mapping work to the New York City Metropolitan Region: New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. To meet the needs of its customers and partners, the USGS selected a 29-county study area.

Researchers documented urban extent through time in the anticipation of evaluating the land use/land cover changes and assessing the impact of development. They prepared datasets showing over 60 years of urban change, from 1928 to 1993, and distributed these to the project partners. The USGS continues to work with its partners, Cornell University, Regional Plan Association, New York Public Library, University of California Santa Barbara, and its own mapping centers.

Partnerships
USGS would like to hear from you if you are interested in collaborating with us in any way, or if you have ideas/suggestions that you would like to provide. We are also interested in organizations that can help to contribute data to our temporal database, and those who can help to build and refine our database.
